The painting is a battle between positivism and negativism. One will see a melting and the other will see snow under a shade. Originally the piece was all painted with various shades of yellow, ocre and gold to interpret more physically that the Alps is one of Switzerland's treasured gold. Yellow paints are still noticeable running along the left edges of the painting. Eventually, the artist decided to be more realistic and just focus more on painting the entourage of the painting— the Skifahrer.
